They also stated that they cannot sustain the current wage bills and that they will have to get rid of the most expensive players. At the moment, Michael Essien is on an annual salary of 800,000 Euros and Panathinaikos said that they cannot continue paying such a wage any longer.

There is news that Michael Essien might be leaving Panathinaikos after failing to get enough playing time with the Greek side.
Essien has been reported as saying that he was surprised with the way his coach is treating him.
Michael Essien has been plagued with injuries ever since he made the move from Chelsea to the Greek club. But now that he is fully fit he is finding it strange why the coach does not want to play him more often.
He said that he was fit and that he is ready to play if ever the manager needs him but so far he did not have enough playing time.
He had discussions with the coaching staff, and there are no issues on the injury front as well as technical aspect. Essien believes that he is fully fit and that he can contribute to the club success but for unknown reasons the manager refuse to play him more often. For him, there are other reasons other than football that has kept him out of the pitch and hoped that things will change fast for him. He said that he is a fighter and that in recent weeks he did not have enough opportunities to do it for the team.
There is even news that Essien had fought with the Panathinaikos coach because he was relegated to the substitute bench in the game against Olympiakos. Greek club Panathinaikos are in a state of bother just weeks after bringing in former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien, but not due to the fault of the Ghanaian star.
The experienced professional will become the most expensive player in Greek football after signing a contract worth around € 1.6 million per year. However, his signing comes at a time when Greece has just gone under a period of uncertain history. There is a danger of Greece being knocked out of the Eurozone if they fail to pay a significant sum of debt to the International monetary fund.
A number of banks and other institutions have been closed for more than a week. There is a severe problem of the country running out of cash. Hence, banks have allowed withdrawal of just € 60 per person per day through the ATMs. The situation could get more desperate if Greece is thrown out of Eurozone due to the failure to pay back the debts. Former Barnsley goalkeeper Luke Steele is currently withPanathinaikos and says that the situation is desperate than ever. It is, however, unlikely to affect the footballers, who earn multi-million pound contracts. Essien joinedPanathinaikos after a short spell in Italian football with AC Milan.
